An exciting project for the centre of Newtown.

Newtown Town Council and Powys County Council have secured significant funding from Welsh Government to undertake a major project that could see the centre of Newtown enhanced by a range of exciting measures to make the town Greener.

​

The funding is aimed at “Greening” town centres by installing Urban Green Infrastructure (street planting, rain gardens and sustainable drainage etc) that supports economic regeneration and wider sustainable development. This is an exciting opportunity to change the look and feel of the town centre whilst helping the town with its commitments to tackling climate change.

The project in Newtown will initially work in 4 areas within the town.

- The junction of Back Lane and High Street (outside Iceland store)

- Along High Street where there is currently a sloping pavement - raising the pedestrian area, to create a flatter location for street markets, café area and pop-up events. There will also be rain gardens, with channelled drainage, helping improve flood resilience.

- Severn Square, which is currently hardstanding – drainage will be created for a large plantation and provision of new seating improves opportunities for rest and socialising in a pleasant greener space.

- Gas Street Car Park giving an extension to the river area

 

Powys County Council in partnership with Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council have developed initial ideas (see plans below) for Newtown’s town centre and are launching a consultation on 3 of these areas to capture the views of Newtown’s residents and town centre business owners.
